Dr Seuss is always a crowd pleaser. His stories are lovingly crafted, filled with rhyme and overflowing with imagination. Each year the Made at Curve team bring to life a classic children’s story and this winter we are treated to their boisterous and bonkers version of The Cat in the Hat.
Just like in the storybooks, this production of The Cat in the Hat whisks its audience into a wonderfully whacky world of adventure. The set is brilliantly designed to make the audience feel like we have been thrown straight into the book itself with a beautifully simple, sketched house interior. As the story progresses more and more aspects are added to this simple design making it increasingly interesting and mesmerising to behold.
A small cast bring the story to life and all bring heaps of enthusiasm to the production. Despite a number of last minute cast changes when I attended, the cast do well to make the show as interactive as possible, getting the audience up and out of their seats dancing in the aisles. Act 1 feels long and a little slow with a lot of scene setting in the beginning and whilst Cat’s arrival certainly gets things going he did feel a little robotic at times. The introduction of Thing 1 and Thing 2 in act 2 is what really brings this show to life and their presence on stage is most definitely the highlight of this production. Their acrobatics and general chaos-causing is brilliantly entertaining and keeps the kids completely hooked.
With balancing acts, singalongs, acrobatics, slapstick and a touch of theatrical magic there is enough action packed into this production to keep the kids well entertained. Despite feeling slow and robotic at times, this show certainly won over my young companions.
Of course as with all good children’s productions The Cat in the Hat has a very happy ending, looks at trust, morals and responsibility and leaves their young audience with a question in their minds – “What would YOU do, if your mother asked YOU?”
